Russia Ukraine Conflict:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that some of the people who were set free were soldiers and officers who had been sentenced to death in areas that were controlled by Russia.
Exchange of Prisoners:
Early Thursday morning, Ukraine announced that a Russian prisoner would be freed in exchange for the release of hundreds of Ukrainian fighters who had been guarding a steel plant in Mariupol during the Russian offensive. Ukraine has been trying to free these prisoners for a few months, and in exchange, it will release a prisoner who is a friend of Vladimir Putin, who is the president of Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said that his government had freed 215 Ukrainians and other people from Russia’s control. He said that many of these people are soldiers and officers who were sentenced to death on land that was controlled by the Russians. The Russian government hasn’t said anything about the prisoner swap yet.
What’s Medvedchuk’s name?
In exchange for Viktor Medvedchuk, an opposition leader backed by Russia, 200 Ukrainian prisoners will be set free. Medvedchuk is a citizen of Ukraine. Medvedchuk, a 68-year-old member of the oligarchy, escaped from house arrest in Ukraine a few days before the Russian invasion on February 24, but he was caught again in April. He was found guilty of treason and helping a terrorist group buy coal in the Russian-backed Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Putin is thought to be close to Medvedchuk’s youngest daughter. After he was taken into custody, the people in charge in Moscow were very angry. Medvedchuk is in charge of the political council of the Opposing Platform for Life party in Ukraine, which is backed by Russia. It is the largest group in Ukraine’s parliament that is against the government. The government has stopped the party from running.
Zelensky said that the Ukraine released five more civilians in exchange for the release of 55 Russian prisoners in another prisoner exchange.
The UN is happy about the prisoner swap
Antonio Guterres, who is the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that the prisoner swap is “no small achievement.” He said, “There is still a lot more to be done to ease the suffering caused by the war in Ukraine.”
Zelensky said that a lot of the soldiers who were freed from Russian control were from Ukraine’s Azov regiment. He called them heroes.
